CPJ's Signature Wins

After tonight's headlines, here is my take on Johnson's biggest 5 wins for the white & gold.

#5
[#4] Virginia Tech 23 @ [#19] Georgia Tech 28
Bobby Dodd Stadium, ATLANTA, GA. 6:00 PM, October 17, 2009

Georgia Tech finally knocks off the biggest bully in the ACC, #4 VA Tech, in front of a packed house at Bobby Dodd and nationwide on ESPN. Josh Nesbitt rushes for 3 TDs and Tech completes just 1 pass, a 51 yarder to Bebe Thomas. The win snapped Georgia Tech's 17-game winless streak at home against opponents ranked in the top five.

#4
[#5] Clemson 17 @ Georgia Tech 31
Bobby Dodd Stadium, ATLANTA, GA. 8:00 PM, October 29, 2011

After a hot start, Georgia Tech comes in the underdog having lost two straight. The Jackets execution is flawless in the first half, giving Tech a 24-3 lead at the break. Tevin Washington rushes for 176 yards and breaks the two largest runs of his career, leading GT to a 31-17 upset victory over undefeated #5 Clemson and ending the Tigers run for a national title.

#3
[#15] Florida St 28 @ Georgia Tech 31
Bobby Dodd Stadium, ATLANTA, GA. 3:30 PM, November 1, 2008

Florida State looks poised to win with the ball on the 3 with less than a minute left, but true freshman Cooper Taylor, making his first career start and his helmet-to-football hit pops the ball loose. The Jackets recover on the goal line to seal the win, shocking the Seminoles. Georgia Tech's victory snaps an 0-12 skid against Florida State and gets the Jackets their first win against FSU since 1975- their first in ACC history. Jonathan Dwyer rushes for 145 yards and scores on runs of 36 and 66 yards for Georgia Tech.

#2
[#22] Georgia Tech 45 @ [#11] Georgia 42
Sanford Stadium, ATHENS, GA. 12:00 PM, November 29, 2008

In Paul Johnson's first game in Athens it looks to be much of the same for the Jackets, going into halftime down 28-12. The Jackets find a way to fire back in the second half winning a shootout in Athens; against the Dawgs stars Stafford and Moreno- two future NFL first round draft picks.
Roddy Jones rushed for 214 yards and Jonathan Dwyer ran for 144, each scoring a pair of TDs. The Jackets bested Georgia 201-1 yards in the 3rd quarter, outscoring the Bulldogs 26-0 to take a 10-point lead. Paul Johnson becomes the first Georgia Tech coach to win his first match-up vs. Georgia since Pepper Rodgers in 1974, giving Tech it's first win in the series since 2000.

#1
[#10] Georgia Tech 39 vs. Clemson 34
Raymond James Stadium, TAMPA, FL. 8:00 PM, December 5, 2009

After a tough win in Atlanta, the Jackets had to beat them again, this time for a conference championship and the 2009 ACC Title. Jonathan Dwyer and Josh Nesbitt both rushed for over 100 yards for Tech, doing just enough to win a shootout in Tampa. Georgia Tech victory gave the program its first outright conference championship since 1990 and it's first BCS Bowl appearance in school history, a trip to the Orange Bowl in Miami- All in only Johnson's second year as head coach.
